The SpitFires that nearly broke the sound barrier
In 1947, Chuck Yeager was the first man who achieved
breaking the sound barrier in a plane, but before him there were also some
people who got very close to it.
In a couple of times, some pilots have got really
close to the sound barrier; it's the case of Erik Brown, and Anthony
Martindale. Both were aboard of a Mk II Spitfire, a British one -seated
warplane, which entered in service in the RAF two years later after the beginning
of the second world war. Those planes weren't designed to reach those high speeds,
and the pilots lived a very dangerous moment.
